The add-ons are not a separate basket or a checkout extension. Each one arrives at checkout as a line item with its own price, so refunds, taxes, reporting and accounting all treat it the way they treat anything else in the order.
That is the reason it works on any plan and any theme, without touching checkout.
Tick an add-on. It becomes a line item and the subtotal moves, which is what the app does in a merchant's cart.
The problem
Shoppers would pay for gift wrap and shipping protection, but the cart has nowhere to offer them. Adding a paid extra used to mean editing checkout, so most shops never do it.
